PESAID Gains International Recognition at High-Level Climate and Development Meeting in Berlin

PESAID is proud to announce its participation in a high-level international meeting in Berlin, Germany, where our Executive Director, Treeza Auma, was specially invited to present the organization's innovative ideas and community-driven solutions.

As a result of these engagements, PESAID has been invited to develop a proposal on water waste management and accessibility for consideration in a newly initiated international project. The organization has also been identified as a potential grassroots partner for mangrove restoration initiatives, recognizing our commitment to environmental sustainability and community resilience.

Notably, Treeza Auma was the only Kenyan participant in these discussions, showcasing the growing recognition of PESAID's work beyond national borders. Participants expressed strong interest in our organization's profile, approaches, and impact in advancing inclusive and locally led development.

PESAID also presented its ideas on assistive devices and inclusive development, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that older persons, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable populations are included in climate action and development processes.

The Executive Director is further scheduled to hold a special engagement with senior leadership from the Global Center for Climate Mobility, opening new opportunities for collaboration on climate resilience, mobility, and sustainable development.

This milestone reflects the power of locally driven solutions and reinforces PESAID's commitment to creating lasting impact in communities across Kenya and beyond.

Together, we continue to amplify grassroots voices on the global stage.

On 15th June 2026, PESAID joined the County Government of Kilifi, Haki Yetu, Umoja Women, the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC), and other partners in commemorating World Elder Abuse Awareness Day at Matano Manne, Ganze Sub-county, Kilifi County.
The event, held under the theme "Promoting Intergenerational Solidarity," brought together over 200 older persons, government officials, community leaders, youth representatives, and civil society organizations to raise awareness about the growing challenge of elder abuse and explore sustainable solutions.
The forum was graced by distinguished leaders including Lady Justice Mugure Thande, Kilifi County Chief Officer for Gender Madam Ruth Dama, the Deputy County Commissioner, religious leaders, local chiefs, and elders' representatives.
During the discussions, older persons shared their experiences and concerns regarding increasing cases of abuse, neglect, land-related conflicts, and accusations of witchcraft. Many elders highlighted that abuse often originates from close family members, leaving them vulnerable and fearful.
Lady Justice Mugure Thande revealed that she had received 130 new cases involving deaths of older persons linked to abuse, while Madam Ruth Dama noted that 95 elder abuse-related deaths had been recorded by 2025. The leaders called for stronger collaboration among government institutions, communities, and families to protect older persons and uphold their dignity and rights.
Participants were also sensitized on healthy ageing, the importance of registering with the Social Health Authority (SHA), and opportunities available through government and community support programmes.
A key outcome of the event was the proposal to establish a dedicated safe space for older persons in Ganze Sub-county. Stakeholders announced that KSh 10 million has been earmarked for the initiative, with plans underway to identify a suitable location.
PESAID was represented by Ann Wambui, who reaffirmed the organization's commitment to advancing the rights, dignity, health, and wellbeing of older persons through advocacy, community engagement, and partnerships.
As elder abuse cases continue to rise, collective action remains critical in ensuring that older persons live free from violence, discrimination, and neglect.

Ahead of Biodiversity Day, PESAID KE participated in a beach clean-up initiative focused on protecting oceans, preserving marine ecosystems, and promoting a cleaner and healthier environment for future generations.
Marine pollution remains a major threat to biodiversity and to communities that depend on healthy oceans for their livelihoods. Through collective action and environmental awareness, communities can contribute to restoring and protecting coastal ecosystems while encouraging responsible environmental practices.
This initiative reflects PESAID Ke’s continued commitment to sustainability, climate action, and community-led efforts that support both people and nature.

Today, PESAID had the privilege of visiting Kurunzi Cerebral Palsy Center, where we were warmly welcomed by the founder, Aisha Mohammed.

The visit was deeply inspiring as we witnessed the incredible work being done to support children living with cerebral palsy through therapy sessions conducted every Monday and Thursday. Behind every smile is a story of courage, resilience, and hope, supported by dedicated caregivers and a compassionate community.

At PESAID, we are honored to explore partnership opportunities with this noble initiative as we continue promoting inclusivity, dignity, and equal opportunities for children with disabilities.

We believe that together, we can create a more inclusive and compassionate society where every child is given the care, support, and hope they deserve. We also invite partners, well-wishers, and friends to join us in making a meaningful difference in the lives of these children.

Over the past year, PESAID has taken a leading role in supporting the development of a county wide survey on the situation of older people in Kilifi County. This work was carried out as part of the Kilifi County Elderly Persons Steering Committee, a multi sectoral platform bringing together government, civil society, faith based institutions, and community actors.

The purpose of the survey was to generate credible data that would establish a baseline on abuse, neglect, and the overall wellbeing of older people. This baseline will guide future interventions, strengthen coordination among duty bearers, and support evidence based advocacy and planning. It also helps ensure that cases of abuse are followed up through the right systems, including social services, law enforcement, and the justice sector.

The findings confirm that many older people in Kilifi continue to face serious challenges, including violence, neglect, displacement, and limited access to justice and health services. Despite existing constitutional and policy protections, gaps in coordination, data, and awareness continue to leave many older people unprotected.

PESAid remains committed to working with county and national institutions, civil society partners, and communities to translate this evidence into action. Older people deserve dignity, protection, and recognition as valued members of society.

PESAID team led by Treeza Auma and Faith Ongiri had a productive conversation with @Monika Nedic from the @Mohanji Foundation Spain, exploring shared values and opportunities for collaboration in community wellbeing and social impact.

During the discussion, we exchanged insights on compassion-driven service, inclusive development, and strengthening support systems for vulnerable groups.

We also highlighted PESAID’s ongoing work in Kenya including our efforts in elderly care, disability inclusion, youth empowerment, climate action, and community health.

Both organizations share a strong commitment to humanity, dignity, and sustainable community transformation.

We look forward to continued dialogue and exploring areas where joint initiatives can create deeper impact.

Because our principle is not negotiable:
Nothing about us without us.

If we are serious about equality, then we must listen.
If we are serious about inclusion, then we must reform.
If we are serious about justice, then we must act, now.

Today marks a meaningful milestone the World Second Summit for Social Development and the First Leaders’ Meeting of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty.

PESAID joined Food Transition Day hosted by Plant Based Treaty at the Bonn J Marriott Hotel. As a civil society delegate, we took part in discussions on transforming food systems for climate action, public health, and food security. We connected with organizers, partners, and policymakers, and contributed to roundtable conversations on practical plant based solutions.
The program featured talks and reflections from campaigners and researchers, including sessions captured on video after the event. We appreciate the space created for civil society voices and look forward to continued collaboration that places food and agriculture at the heart of climate solutions.

PESAID joined the recent roundtable on transforming global food systems as a vital climate solution.

While discussions often focus on energy, the reality is stark: emissions from industrial food systems, especially animal agriculture, alone threaten our global climate goals. This crisis demands urgent, inclusive action.

For communities we work with, Persons with Disabilities and Older Persons in Kenya, the impacts of climate change are not abstract. Drought, food insecurity, and poor nutrition hit hardest where resilience is already stretched.

We must ensure that climate-smart, predominantly plant-based food systems not only protect our environment but prioritize equity, access, and dignity for all, especially those too often left out of the conversation.

Food systems transformation is a justice issue. It’s about survival, sovereignty, and sustainable futures, for everyone.
